Respond to Lombok, Donggala, and Palu disasters

13 October 2018 - Wolfson College

Respond to Lombok, Donggala, and Palu disasters

- Call for declaration of the Palu-Donggala earthquake and tsunami as a national disaster

- Improve the state of our earthquake and tsunami early warning systems. Learn from the case studies in Japan, Mexico, and other countries

- Support Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB)'s recommendation to local goverments to create microzonation map as a foundation for urban planning

- Urge the government to audit buildings and publish the results - the public has the right to know which buildings are safe and which are not. This kind of data should be available in the public domain

- Induce property developers to improve building standards, the way Japan did post-1981. Just like developers are advertising that their properties are flood-free, we need a culture of building (and demanding for properties) that are earthquake-resistant

- Introduce disaster preparation drills. Distribute disaster preparedness manuals, short catchy manual videos in social media, etc

- Increase national awareness by introducing Disaster Awareness Day, to make sure at least once a year earthquake drills and evacuation simulations are held

- Do damage simulations that simulate effects of a major earthquake on a big city such as Jakarta, Yogya, Palu.

- Ask the government to include disaster management and preparedness in curriculum for high school students. Students can do projects where they try to design earthquake-resistant buildings, or find the best evacuation route, or calculate/simulate the impact of an earthquake, or come up with creative ideas for community-based early warning systems, etc.

What we can do as student/alumni:
- Donate & encourage others to donate via our fundraising page: https://kitabisa.com/oxfordforlombok

- Hold a panel discussion, inviting experts, stakeholders and policymakers to discuss about the current state of disaster management & mitigation in Indonesia, and what can be done to improve the status quo (e.g. how to push for better policies, how to increase awareness and educate the masses, how to build earthquake-resistant buildings, best practices around the world, etc)

- Hold a training of trainers, where we train university students in a disaster awareness, provide them with training materials and ask them to disseminate the information. We train them so they can train others in their respective universities
