How Venture Capital Shapes a Start-up’s Future:

The Story of Bukalapak’s IPO

Over the last decades, Venture Capital (VC) has become an increasingly important source of start-up funding for entrepreneurs with innovative products. At the beginning of their journeys to raise early-stage capital, the decision on which funds to turn to for investment and which investors to bring in as strategic partners will, more often than not, be a crucial ‘make-or-break’ one to make. Entrepreneurs these days face a number of options for consideration. Generally speaking, the most important criteria to consider when choosing partners are the financial terms in the term sheet. However, equally important, entrepreneurs need to weigh in the quality and experience of the VC itself and how it can help contribute, through its network, to greatly affect the rate of success for their start-up companies.

Recently, Bukalapak has raised fresh fund of IDR 21.9 Trillion (USD 1.5 Billion) from its Initial Public Offering (IPO) at the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), scoring the biggest ever Indonesia’s IPO and the first of Indonesia’s tech unicorn to tap into the country’s stock market. This is the story of how they benefit greatly from VC’s investment from early-stage, and following through their journey to reach this huge milestone and set the stage for a wave of other tech unicorns’ listings to follow suit.
