Our History

An alumni society. A group of thinkers and leaders. The Oxford Society of Indonesia (OXSI) traces its roots back to 2015 when a group of passionate alumni came together with to revive the Oxford Cambridge Alumni Society (Oxbridge). By that time, the Oxbridge Society had been dormant and there was a growing need for a community that could serve the interest of alumni to connect and collaborate with one another.

After several unsuccessful attempts, in 2017, through an unanimous decision in an open forum, the alumni made the hard decision to pivot towards establishing the Oxford Society as a distinct entity. This decision allowed the alumni to redefine their goals, strategies, and identity, setting the stage for a new chapter in the society's history.

After several consultations, the Oxford Society of Indonesia’s name and constitution were approved by a general meeting held in July of 2017 and attended by over 30 alumni members. The Oxford Society of Indonesia (OXSI) achieved a successful establishment one year later in 4 May 2018, with the acknowledgement of the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

Since 2018, OXSI has conducted numerous events and collaborated with many organizations and key stakeholders in both Indonesia and the region with annual meetings for the Oxford Society members, as well as having a general election in 2021 in compliance with the Indonesia’s law and regulation for an association. Throughout this time and prior to its establishment, OXSI has maintained regular communication with the University of Oxford’s Alumni Office. This ongoing relationship has been instrumental in fostering a strong connection between the society and the University.

In 2022, the University of Oxford’s Alumni Office and the University of Cambridge’s Alumni office decided that the growing number of alumni from Oxford and Cambridge would be best served with stand-alone Oxford Society and Cambridge Society. This structure would allow each society to focus on the specific needs of their alumni. The University of Oxford’s Alumni Office then entrusted the Oxford Society to serve the community of Oxford alumni in Indonesia. With this acknowledgement, OXSI is now recognized and fully supported by both Alumni Offices as the only society in Indonesia that can represent the interest of Oxford students (both new and current), Oxford alumni members (of Indonesian nationality or foreign alumni residing in Indonesia) and to act as the bridge and the first port-of-call for the University of Oxford with the privilege to use the University of Oxford Alumni Networks logo; and no other entity or association can represent the University of Oxford or use the name “Oxford” for the above-mentioned interests in Indonesia.

Since its establishment, the Oxford Society has experienced remarkable growth. With a membership exceeding 250 individuals to date, the society has become a vibrant and engaging community. Members have come together to organize various activities and events, ranging from networking sessions, intellectual exchanges/ forums, social events, mentorship and philanthropy drives. The Oxford Society is organized with a framework that is comprised of the Executive Committee and the Cabinet and the Supervisory Committee. As the society looks towards the future, it remains committed to its mission of strengthening the bonds that unite Oxford alumni and making a positive impact for Better Indonesia and the world.
